Term &#8220;<strong>carbohydrates<\/strong>&#8221; is not equal with term\u00a0 &#8220;<strong>sugars<\/strong>&#8220;. Sugar is a term used for <span id=\"i79074_1_m\" class=\"m\" lang=\"en\">sucrose<\/span>\u00a0(table sugar), but also for glucose, fructose, lactose and maltose. Carbohydrates are <strong>combinations<\/strong> of different <strong>sugars<\/strong>, <strong>starch<\/strong> and <strong>fibre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The main carbohydrate for human body is <strong>glucose<\/strong>. The whole organism, especially <strong>brain<\/strong>, uses glucose for the main energy source, despite physical efforts. In the case of <strong>carbohydrate\u00a0<\/strong><span id=\"i24321_1_m\" class=\"m\" lang=\"en\"><strong>deficiency<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>the body starts to synthesize glucose from protein, which significantly <strong>weakens the body&#8217;s immune system. Even the bodyfat reserve is used with the energy from carbohydrates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Carbohydrates fulfill many functions in the body:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>main source of energy: 1 gr carbohydrates = 4 kcal<\/li>\n<li>belongs in the composition of cells, tissues and hormones<\/li>\n<li>determines the blood group<\/li>\n<li>belongs in the composition of antibodies<\/li>\n<li>glycogen is a temporary glucose supply that the body can easily use in the times of starvation<\/li>\n<li>fibers are necessary for the maintenance of the digestive system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The National Institute for Health Development says that <strong>50-60%<\/strong> of daily food energy should come from carbohydrates. Energy from added sugars should not be more than <strong>10%<\/strong> of daily food energy. <em>Healthy adult whose daily energy need is 2000 kcal should consume:\u00a0<strong>0,5 x 2000 kcal\/4 kcal = 250 g<\/strong> up to\u00a0<strong>0,6 x 2000 kcal\/4 kcal = 300 g<\/strong>\u00a0carbohydrates daily. Accordingly when daily energy need is 2500 kcal, one adult should consume\u00a0 313\u2013375 gr of carbohydrates, 3000 kcal means 375\u2013450 g carbohydates.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The main sources of carbohydrates are <strong>grains<\/strong> and <strong>potatoes<\/strong>. Fruits, fruit juices and berries consist also from carbohydrates &#8211; different natural sugars.
